My name is Ms. Whittaker and I am so excited to be your child's 2nd grade teacher this year. I have created this website to keep everyone up-to-date on what's going on in the classroom. Here you can see the weekly homework, classroom updates, test dates, and any other information I have to give. You can also find my contact information for easy e-mail communication with me. January 16-19
I hope everyone enjoyed their day off of school! With this cold front approaching please send your children to school with the appropriate jackets/sweaters! We don't want anyone catching a cold and having to miss valuable class time. This week in Reading we will focus on a story called "Who's Buying? Who's Selling?" which ties in many Social Studies concepts throughout the text. In Math we will continue our unit on place value, and in English we will focus on sentence structure and commas in the names of places. I am so glad to be back in the swing of things with this amazing 2nd grade class! This is our first full week back from our break, so please be sure your children are present at school to get back into our classroom routines and procedures. This week in ELA we will be focusing on the story "From Farm to Market," which ties in valuable Social Studies economics concepts as well. In Math we will be moving into place value, and in English we will begin quotation marks. I hope everyone has a wonderful week!
December 11-15
What a crazy Friday we had last week! Now that the weather has calmed down, it's time for another great week. This is the last full week before the holidays, so let's work extra hard to boost those final grades for the semester. In Reading we will be learning about holidays from around the world and doing several projects around this theme. In Math we will finish up our subtraction unit and review addition with and without regrouping. In English we will have a review of the topics we have gone over so far.
We will have our holiday party next Wednesday (December 20). Please consider donating some store bought baked goods, candy, or holiday trinkets for our party. We have 24 students. This is a half day, and we release from school at 12:30. Also, winter wonderland is Tuesday, December 19th at 2:00. I hope to see you all there!

Thank you for another amazing week last week! This week we will begin practicing for our Winter Wonderland, which is on Tuesday, December 20th at 2:00. Please come and see our performance! This week in ELA we will be analyzing the story "The Stranger" as well as reviewing several forms on proper nouns. In Math we will continue with subtraction with and without regrouping. Please continue to practice math facts with your children! Let's have a great week!
November 27-December 1
I hope everyone had a relaxing and fun Thanksgiving holidays! With just about 3 weeks until Christmas vacation, it's very important that we all encourage the students to try their best and keep working hard. This week in Reading we will be analyzing sequence of events in the story "Seasons of Farming." In English we will continue with adjectives, and in math we will finish up our addition with regrouping topic. We will also begin subtraction with regrouping towards the end of the week.
We also have a special guest in our class for the next few weeks! "Diamond" is our elf on the shelf that the students have named. He is watching over their behavior to report back to Santa Claus each night. I know with this amazing group of kids he will only have good things to report!
November 13-17
This is the last week before our Thanksgiving holidays! Be sure all students come to school so there is no need for makeup work/tests after the break. We will have NO SCHOOL from November 20-24. This week we will be reading a story all about the first Thanksgiving and comparing it to our own lives in Reading. We will also do several Thanksgiving activities to go along with this story. In English we will begin our unit on adjectives, and in Math we will continue with 2 digit addition. Thanks for everything you do, and have a great week!
November 6-10
It's hard to believe it's already the second week in November! With Thanksgiving holidays quickly approaching it's very important for your children to come to school every day! This week we will begin our Seasons of Farming Unit in Reading. This unit ties in a lot of Social Studies concepts as well. In Math we will continue adding and subtracting two-digit numbers, and in English we will be learning all about contractions. Thank you so much to everyone who participated in the charity drive last week! The donations were very much appreciated by the charities involved. Have a great week!
October 30-November 3
We have NO SCHOOL this Wednesday! Enjoy your day off :). In Reading this week we will focus on another version of the American Cinderella story to wrap up our unit on fairy tales. In English we will continue studying past tense verbs, and in Math we will begin our topic on subtracting two-digit numbers. Don't forget to send your child in a costume this Tuesday if you'd like to. Students cannot wear masks or bring any type of fake weapon. Please also send your $4.00 donation to have your child participate in the dress down events this week. Monday: wear a pink shirt with your uniform bottom.
Tuesday: costume.
Wednesday: NO SCHOOL
Thursday: students can wear caps.
Friday: students can wear their a shirt to show favorite sports team with their uniform bottom.

Thank you to all of the students and parents who came to our school's Fall Fest this past Friday! It was a wonderful time, and I really enjoyed seeing you there. This week we have a half day on Wednesday. In Reading we will be focusing on an Irish Cinderella tale called "Billy Beg." In English we will continue our unit on verbs, but we will dive into past tense verbs. In Math we will finish up basic two-digit addition strategies and move into subtraction. I also want to point our something fantastic going on in our classroom. Students have been treating each other with SUCH AMAZING kindness. They have been writing each other kind note, helping each other, and making sure that nobody feels sad or left out. It has been such a joy to see. I can already tell the effects this generosity is having on our class family. Thanks for fostering this kindness at home, and have a fantastic week!

This Friday is our Fall Fest! We are all very excited, especially since Fall Fest will be held after school this year for the first time. Please order your game bands/tickets ahead of time if at all possible, and don't forget to donate $1.00 to our grade level basket. I hope to see many of you there! In Reading this week we are focusing on an Egyptian Cinderella fairy tale called "The Girl With the Red Slippers." In English we will start our unit on verbs, and in math we will begin adding two-digit numbers. Thank you for all of your continued support, and have a great week!

I'm so glad everyone stayed safe during the "hurricane" this weekend, and I know we're all ready for a great week! Fall Fest is just 2 weeks away, so we are asking that each child donate $1 to go towards our 2nd grade Fall Fest basket. Please send your dollar by this Friday! Our story of the week is a Chinese Cinderella fairy tale called "Yeh Shen." We will be focusing on character and physical traits of the characters from this story. In English we will learn about proper nouns, and in Math we will learn about counting forwards and backwards, even and odd numbers, and using data from a chart. Have a great week!

Happy October students and parents! This week is our Math and Science night on Wednesday, October 4th. I hope to see as many of you there as possible! We will be focussing on the African Cinderella story "Mufarro's Beautiful Daughters" in Reading this week. In English we will move on to possessive nouns, and in Math we will finish up our unit on arrays and begin moving further into more complex addition. I hope everyone is ready for a great week!

I can't believe we've been in school for over 30 days now! Time flies when you're having fun! Don't forget that this week we have an early dismissal day on Wednesday. There is no after care on this day. Also, please sign and return all interim grades that were sent home in your child's blue folder this past Friday. If you have any questions about these grades please don't hesitate to ask!
This week we will be reading about the Mexican Cinderella story "Domitila." We will be comparing and contrasting this story with our original Cinderella tale as well as analyzing characters from this fairy tale. In English we will continue discussing nouns, but we will also move into singular and plural nouns as well. In Math we will finish up our simple subtraction unit and move into adding with arrays. Thank you to everyone who came out to support Audubon at McDonald's this past Wednesday! It was a lot of fun to see all of you there. This week in Reading we will be reading a Caribbean Cinderella story called Cendrillon. In English we will begin learning about nouns and the different types of nouns there are, and in Math we will begin our topic on subtraction. Please practice basic subtraction facts at home with your children to help them master this concept even more. This Monday, September 18, is Constitution Day! The students will be learning about the Constitution and even making their own class Constitution to sign in celebration of this day.
September 11-15
This Wednesday is our McDonald's fundraiser night! Please come out to support our school. Thank you to everyone who came to Open House-we had a GREAT turnout. This week in ELA we will be focussing on the Native American Cinderella story "Rough Face Girl." In Math we will be finishing up our unit on addition and using different strategies. Please remember to go over the spelling and vocabulary words with your children each night to improve their test scores, and have a great week!

NO SCHOOL Monday! Enjoy your day off! This week is Open House on Wednesday from 6-8. We will meet in the gym at 6:00. This Friday is also grandparents day. Don't forget to send in the yellow form with $5.00 attached if you child's grandparents would like to attend.
This week in Reading we will continue our Cinderella unit with a focus on story elements. In English we will begin going over the types of sentences, and in math we will continue practicing addition using different strategies. August 28-September 1
It's time for another great week in second grade! This week we will be taking our ELA and Math pretests so that we can monitor your children's growth throughout the year. We will also be starting our Cinderella unit in Reading, which is always an enjoyable time for students! In Math we will be continuing our unit on addition.
Reminder: Wednesday is our first early release day, which means school will let out at 1:20. Buses will run exactly 2.5 hours early to accommodate this schedule. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns, and have a great week!
August 21-25
This is an exciting week at Audubon and across the nation! On Monday, August 21, there will be a solar eclipse. Students may wear all black to celebrate and we will be having "solar" treats in class as we watch the eclipse over a live stream. Students will not be allowed to go outside in order to protect their eyes from the sun's harsh rays.
This week in ELA we will be focusing on the story "David's New Friend" and practicing identifying story elements. In English we will study action and naming parts of sentences. In Math we will review writing addition and subtraction number sentences.
Please send in any school supplies and supply fees that have not been turned in yet! Thank you for a great first full week of school last week, and I look forward to another one this week!

What a great first two days of school! I thoroughly enjoyed meeting all of your amazing children, and I can't wait to continue getting to know them this week! Each child is so special, and I know we're going to have a wonderful year together as a class family.
If you haven't already, please send in your child's completed emergency card, handbook form on the first page of your handbook, and $10 supply fee. This will ensure your children have everything they need for the remainder of the year. Remember to send all school supplies with students as well!
This week we will be kicking off Reading with a story comparing schools of the past to school life now. In English we will review how to begin and end sentences with capital letters and punctuation marks. In Math we will review the hundreds, tens, and ones place value positions, as well as how to complete number bonds. Science this week will focus on the environment and collecting data.

Yo Ho Yo Ho A Pirate's Life For Me!
You guessed it! We have a pirate inspired classroom this year with the theme "Setting Sail for Second Grade." I am the captain of our classroom pirate ship and all of the students are my first mates. We will work together to sail towards knowledge island where we will discover tons of "buried treasure" that will last us a lifetime.

Meet and Greet!
We will be having a "Meet and Greet" Wednesday, August 9th from 3:00-5:00 pm (Note: parents and students may come any time between 3-5 for a quick meeting and do not have to stay the entire time). This is an opportunity for me to meet all of the students and parents before school officially starts and to give out some information. It is also the time to bring all student school supplies. Don't forget about the $10.00 supply fee as well, which will be used to provide students with additional resources throughout the year. I hope to see you all there!
